How university admission works in Sweden

There is no single national entrance exam. Places go by gymnasium grades or by the university aptitude test, högskoleprovet — and the best strategy uses both.

Eligibility

General eligibility comes with a gymnasium diploma that meets the requirements. Many programmes also have specific requirements, such as particular mathematics or science courses.

Check specific requirements in Gymnasium 1, while there is still time to choose the right courses.

Selection groups

Applicants compete in selection groups. The main ones rank by gymnasium grades or by the högskoleprovet result, and many programmes fill part of their places from each.

A strong högskoleprovet result gives a second route into competitive programmes.

Högskoleprovet

The test is held twice a year, in spring and autumn. Results stay valid for eight years, and only your best valid result counts.

Deadlines

Applications go through antagning.se. The usual deadlines are 15 April for programmes starting in autumn and 15 October for programmes starting in spring.

Rules are changing

Students who started gymnasium after June 2025 study under Gy25 with subject grades. Check how merit points and selection rules apply to them at UHR before planning courses.
