Grades

Merit value, explained

Merit value is the single number gymnasium admission ranks by. Every grade step in every subject moves it — and some moves are cheaper to win than others.

Points per grade

A = 20, B = 17.5, C = 15, D = 12.5, E = 10, F = 0. The 16 best subject grades are added, plus a modern language as a 17th grade if your child studies one, for a maximum of 340.

Try your own numbers in the merit calculator.

Where points are won

One step up in any subject is worth 2.5 points. Look for subjects where your child is close to the next grade step: that is usually the cheapest gain.

The modern language counts as an extra grade, so taking it seriously can add up to 20 points.

Changes from 2028

A ten-step grading scale calibrated by national exams has been proposed, mostly from July 2028. Children in Year 4 or below in autumn 2026 are likely to apply under the new rules. See the Policy radar.
